Chess on the Street was launched in August 2014, when we installed the first five public chess tables in various locations in Prague. As with the pianos, our chessboards quickly found their supporters and the idea organically spread to other cities.

In the beginnings, we mainly used retired school desks. These did not prove very practical, so we decided for a simple concrete design – minimalist and practically indestructible in an urban environment. Players may bring their own chess pieces or borrow ours, which are kept ready by the chessboard. In 2015 and 2016  we installed 60 boards in 30 cities throughout the country.
